Most stump work in this county happens as an afterthought. A crew takes a tree down, the stump becomes a line at the bottom of the invoice, and a machine turns up three weeks later — whichever machine happened to be free, driven by whoever was spare that morning.

This business went at it from the other end. The wheel is the whole job, so the equipment was chosen for the ground here rather than for whatever fits on the back of a chip truck: a walk-behind narrow enough for the alley gates on the original town plat, and a tracked machine that can be walked down a bluff bench or across a soft river terrace on mats.

What that buys a customer is boring and useful. The date holds because there is no removal running late ahead of it. The price is for grinding rather than absorbed into a tree bill. And when we say a machine will or will not reach a stump, that is a judgement made a few hundred times a year rather than a guess.

Why a Wet Week Moves Your Date and Not Your Price

This town sits low on the river side of a Cumberland bend at four hundred and thirty feet, with a limestone bluff facing it from the far bank, visible from most of the residential streets. Everything about how the working year runs here follows from that.

After the river comes up, the flats and the creek mouths stay soft for the better part of a week even once the water has gone back down. Put a rubber-tyred machine on ground like that and it tears two grooves across the lawn that are still obvious when the grass burns off in August. So bottom jobs get moved back a few days rather than a lawn getting wrecked to protect a date, and you hear that at booking rather than on the morning.

The ridge streets north and east of the square sit on cherty soil over limestone and shed water in a day, so they take the slot instead. Running a stump business in a town three miles across with two soils in it means there is nearly always somewhere dry to work.

What We Charge and Why It Moves

The bands, so you can sanity-check anything you are quoted anywhere: a single small stump generally lands between about $100 and $175, a mid-size one between $175 and $350, and a large hardwood between $350 and $700. Multiples on one visit drop steeply per stump, and there is a minimum service call because a truck and trailer do not roll for less.

What moves a job up its band is rarely the wood. It is the route. Thirty-six inches of gate versus a driveway you can back a trailer down is an hour. Plywood laid across a lawn, a fence panel off and back on, spoil barrowed sixty feet to a truck: that is where the money goes.

Species matters second. Oak, hickory and osage orange feed slowly and cost teeth. Sycamore, box elder and hollow silver maple come out faster than their diameter looks. Depth matters third, and it is a number you choose, not one we assume.

The Local Rules the Job Has to Fit Around

Inside the town limits, the city tree board has authority over trees in street rights-of-way, parks and public places, and the code requires permission before anyone disturbs one. On the older streets around the square, half the mature trees stand in that strip, so on those jobs the paperwork genuinely does come before the grinder.

Outside the town limits it is Cheatham County Building and Codes at 338 Frey Street, and on mapped bottom ground the flood regulations have views about what may be left as fill. On both sides of the line, the power lines belong to a member co-op that keeps a district office here, holds a twenty-foot right-of-way each side of its lines, and asks members to book a service-line drop rather than prune near it themselves.

Where We Draw the Line on a Job

There are four things this outfit will not do, and it is fairer to publish them than to argue about them at your gate.

We will not grind blind beside an unmarked private line. If nobody can say where the propane run or the drainfield goes, the walk-round happens before the machine starts, not after. We will not push spoil over a bluff edge or a river bank to save a haul — it is somebody else's problem downstream and, on mapped ground, it is fill. We will not quote a firm figure off a description; a photograph takes thirty seconds and stops half the arguments in this trade.

And we will not grind saturated bottomland just to keep a date. A ruined lawn costs you more than the wait did, and it makes a liar of the tidy finish we sell.
