What to Send, and How to Measure

Measure the diameter straight across the cut face at the widest point, not around the outside. A tape hooked on one edge and read across the middle is the number that matters; the circumference is roughly three times bigger and every quote based on one comes out wrong.

Then three photographs. Overhead with something in frame for scale. A wide one from where a truck would sit, showing the whole route. And the pinch point — usually a gate, sometimes a gap between a house corner and a fence, occasionally a flight of steps. Add the gate width measured between the posts.

Finally, one line of description: where in the county the lot is, whether it is bottom ground or ridge, and anything buried within a few feet. That is enough to price all but the awkward ones, and the awkward ones we come and look at for nothing.

What Pushes the Number Up

Access, first and by a distance. A stump you can back a trailer to is a different job from one sixty feet behind a house with a thirty-six-inch gate in the way, and the gap between them can be worth more than a foot of diameter.

After that: depth beyond the standard six to twelve inches, which is normal where a slab or a drive is going in over the top. Embedded metal, which is a live possibility on any old fence line out toward Chapmansboro and Bearwallow Road. Rock shelf on the ridge lots, which does not raise the price so much as cap what the price can buy. Hauling the spoil away rather than leaving it. And the sprouters — silver maple, box elder, Callery pear, beech — which get taken wider and deeper so you are not mowing shoots all summer.

What Brings It Down

Numbers. The second stump on a visit is far cheaper than the first, and the sixth is cheaper again, because almost everything you pay for on a small stump is the trailer, the unload, the walk-in and the clean-up, all of which happen once.

Open ground helps: an acreage lot out on the rim where the bigger machine drives to the stump can beat a smaller stump wedged into a town side yard. Leaving the spoil helps, where there is somewhere for it to go. Being flexible on the date helps more than people think, because a job that can slot into an afternoon already committed to that end of the county costs us less to reach.

When We Come and Look Instead

Some jobs cannot honestly be priced from a phone screen, and on those the visit is free and there is no pressure attached to it.

The list is short: bluff benches and bank lots above the water, where the question is whether a machine can be got there at all; river terraces that hold water after a Cumberland rise, where the answer depends on how the ground feels underfoot that week; flares over about sixty inches, where the working circle rather than the diameter sets the time; gated and managed communities, where access has to be arranged with somebody other than you; and anything where two contractors have already said no.
