Most of the plat was built between 1970 and 1979, with infill scattered through 2004, on lots of half an acre to seven tenths. The concrete drives on Plum Dr and Peach St are largely the ones poured at build-out: four inches, no reinforcement, on a base that was good enough for a Buick.

Fifty-five years later the silver maples planted alongside them have done what silver maples do. A panel tents, then cracks along the tent, then the crack opens and the mower catches the lip. By the time the tree comes out, the problem people actually want solved is the slab, and the stump is the first part of that.

The One Part of Town Where the Machine Can Reach It

Half an acre to seven tenths, most lots wide enough for a side approach, several with a detached shop and a hard pad, and a couple of parcels at the back of the plat running past six acres. That combination is unusual in Ashland City and it works in your favour on price.

A stump you can drive to takes the bigger machine, and the bigger machine finishes a thirty-inch maple in a fraction of the time a walk-behind takes threading a downtown side yard. Same tree, same county, different afternoon and a different figure. A mid-size stump on an open yard here generally sits in the one-seventy-five to three-fifty band; the same wood behind a narrow gate does not.

The one thing we will not do is treat your old drive as a road. A 1970 slab with fifty winters in it does not carry a point load the way it carries a car, so we cross on boards at a chosen spot rather than wherever is convenient.

The Streets Are Named After What Is Still Out Back

Peach, Plum, Apricot, Orchard. Those names were not decoration — there is genuine old fruit stock scattered through these back yards, and it did not get planted at random. It went in rows.

So the job here is often eight or ten small stumps arranged on a grid rather than one big one, half of them dead for years and soft all the way through. Rows bring their own trap: stakes, a wire trellis line, or a length of pipe driven as a support, all of it grown over and none of it visible. On a row job we sweep before we start and we work along the line rather than jumping about, because the second the pattern breaks somebody loses track of which ones are done.

Ground like that also disturbs wider than the trunk suggests, so allow for more soil at the finish than you would expect from the size of the wood.

The Back of the Plat and the School Run

The rear boundary of Ashland Heights runs out to old field edge, and the eastern red cedars along it are the leftover fencerow rather than anything anybody planted. Those are the parcels where the acreage jumps, and they are worth pricing as an acreage job rather than a suburban one.

The other local fact that affects your date is traffic. Cheatham Middle on Scoutview Rd and Cheatham County Central High on Cub Circle both feed off this corridor, and a trailer trying to arrive at ten past three does not arrive at ten past three. We aim for a mid-morning start on this side of town, and if you need us outside that, say so and we will make it early instead.

None of that changes the price. It changes whether the crew is standing in your yard when they said they would be.

What we ask about an Ashland Heights job

• Whether the concrete drive is the original pour or a later replacement
• How many stumps there really are once you have walked the back line and counted the dead fruit stock
• Whether any of the old fruit rows had stakes, wire or pipe supports
• Where the shop pad is, since it is usually the best surface on the property to work from
• Whether the septic field, if you are on one, sits between the drive and the back yard
