Two Species Lists, Three Miles Apart
Ashland City is unusual for a town this size in having two completely different growing environments inside a short drive. Down on the alluvium along the river and the creek mouths, the canopy is sycamore, box elder, silver maple, black willow at the waterline, river birch and hackberry. Up on the ridges north and east, on thin cherty soil over limestone, it is white oak, post oak, chinkapin oak, shagbark hickory and eastern red cedar.
Those are not just different names. They are the fast list and the slow list, and the difference in how they grow writes itself into the stump years before anybody thinks about removing the tree.
Which is why a customer who had a sycamore ground last year and gets quoted for an oak of the same diameter this year thinks the second number is a mistake.
Growth Rate Writes the Stump
Deep silt with water always within reach produces wide annual rings and low-density wood. That gives you three things at the stump: a broad buttressed flare far wider than the trunk measured at chest height, a shallow plate of lateral roots running out just under the turf, and heart rot arriving early, because fast wood with big vessels is easy for decay fungi to colonise. A forty-inch bottomland sycamore is frequently a shell of sound sapwood around a barrel of punk.
Thin soil over rock does the opposite. Tight rings, dense wood, a root system that forks downward into every crack in the limestone it can find, and a stump that is sound to the centre at eighty years old. There is no rot in there helping the wheel along.
One caveat that catches people out: cedar on the ridge is dense and stringy rather than merely hard, and it wraps fibre round the wheel in a way oak does not.
What That Means on the Clock and the Invoice
Take two thirty-six-inch stumps. The bottomland sycamore, hollow through the middle, might be an hour and a half, and it costs a set of teeth almost nothing except where flood silt has packed grit into the bark furrows. The ridge white oak of the same diameter is well over two hours, sound the whole way, and it will visibly wear carbide by the end.
So diameter alone is a poor guide to price, which is why we ask what the tree was. It is also why the large hardwood band running from around $350 to $700 is so wide: an oak and a maple can sit at opposite ends of it at identical size.
The flare complicates it further. The sycamore may take less time per cubic inch but its buttress spreads over a far bigger circle, so the machine has to work a wider area to leave you something you can plant in.
And What Happens After the Machine Leaves
The spoil behaves differently too. Soft bottomland wood grinds to a light fluffy material that breaks down into the soil across about two seasons. Oak and hickory grindings are dense, slow and still recognisable as wood chips three or four years later, which matters if you were planning to seed grass over the spot.
Sprouting is the other split. Silver maple and box elder will push shoots from root fragments left in the ground, and so will beech in the hollows south of the river. Cedar does not sprout at all — once it is cut it is finished — and neither do the oaks or hickory.
So the depth and width we grind is not a fixed policy, it is a species decision. A sprouter gets taken wider than it strictly needs so you are not mowing suckers all summer. An oak gets taken to the depth you asked for and no further, because there is nothing left in the ground that is going to do anything.
The short version
Diameter is a weak predictor of what a stump costs in Cheatham County. A hollow bottomland sycamore can come out in half the time a ridge white oak of the same size takes, and the two leave very different piles behind. Tell whoever quotes you what species it was.
